Chris Ofili Exhibition at Tate Britain 'Hip Hop spirit in Art'

Take a trip t the Tate to see a major new exhibition of work by Manchester born Nigerian artist, Chris Ofili, at Tate Britain. The exhibition will bring together approximately 45 paintings from the mid 1990s onwards, including No Woman No Cry - the piece he created in the aftermath of the Stephen Lawrence murder.

Tate Britain has created a special youth ticket: anyone under the age of 26 can enter the exhibition for £5 – usual price is £10 full price and £8.50 for concessions. Just bring along some ID to get this special offer.

Chris Ofili is without a doubt one of the UK's most famous homegrown black artists. Having won the Turner Prize in 1998 aged 30, he now resides in Trinidad. Many of his works have been inspired by growing up in Manchester in the 1980's, religious veiwpoints and his love of Hip Hop Culture, especially bands such as Public Enemy, KRS 1 and Eric B & Rakim.

Chris's works show many parallels with Hip Hop and sampling culture, remixing and re-mastering modern inspirations from art and music to create his own unique takes. He draws on his surroundings to inform his art and commentates on the state of play, exploring areas such as racism, ethnicity and identity.

Chris Ofili's top 14 influential Hip Hop tracks (not in order of preference): Notorious BIG – 10 crack commandments
Common – Heaven somewhere
Method Mad – Bring the pain
Public Enemy – Public Enemy number 1
Erykah Badu – The Healer
Snoop Dogg – Gin & Juice
Wu Tang Clan – C.R.E.A.M
Jay-Z - Blueprint
A Tribe called Quest – The low end theory
The Roots – Clones
NAS – Illamtic
Mos Def - Black on both sides
Talib Kweli – Reflection eternal
Dizzee Rascal - Jezebel

Chris Ofili on how hiphop has inspired his work: "I was drawn to (William) Blake's image first as a watercolour. At the same time I was interested in how Snoop Dogg could sing quite vulgar lyrics with a sweet, smooth West Coast voice, in the coming together of the rough and the smooth. I was curious about trying to make older ideas contemporary and new, and somehow have a relationship to hip-hop culture." – Chris Ofili, in 'Ekow Eshun interviews Chris Ofili' from the Chris Ofili exhibition catalogue, Tate Britain 2010 "I like (hip-hop's) cut-and-paste attitude. You can often hear where one joint ends and another begins, which is something I try to make apparent in my work so you can see how things are made. Hip-Hop takes existing beats, restructures them, and injects the individual in the form of a rap.

Ctrl.Alt.Shift presents United Underground

On Saturday 20th February 2010 visit cutting-edge street culture, film, live music, DJs, artwork and new-school activism where Ctrl.Alt.Shift presents United Underground, a unique collaborative project hosted by the Southbank Centre, British Underground and Riz MC.

After a series of sell-out summer shows, for one night only, experimental youth movement Ctrl.Alt.Shift is bringing together the artists who are shaping London's dynamic underground scene. The event has been created to promote exceptional new talent and activism, positioning music as a potential catalyst for change and highlighting the issue of conflict.

It promises to be an explosive evening, with performances from the likes of Trembling Bells and Aruba Red running alongside political speeches by journalist Ben White and former mayor Ken Livingston, uniting activists and performers from across the cultural and political spectrum.  Meanwhile, an interactive digital installation will allow people to add their own personal messages to a collective call for peace.

The night will also boast DJ sets and live music from the city's best club nights, including Wiley's Eskimo dance, Urban Nerds and the infamous Dirty Canvas, as well as acoustic performances from prolific cellist Laura Moody and Olivia Cheney, who is fresh from her tour with Zero 7.

From 12 noon onwards, Writings On The Wall is a free warm-up event, featuring a screen printing workshop led by Print Club London, and a live showcase of unsigned music acts and spoken word.

Since 2008, Ctrl.Alt.Shift has been working to politicise a new generation of activists for social justice using creativity, photography, film, stories, illustrations and music.
